Bonnie Grace

The Jugs

Bonnie Grace’s ceramic jugs draw inspiration from commemorative ware and traditional pottery forms. Struggling to think in three dimensions, Bonnie approaches clay as though it were paper. From her wobbly line drawings, she shapes slabs of clay into forms that feel both 2D and 3D. Integral to these jugs is a personal coded language. Influenced by the intricate structure of binary code and the grid systems found in textiles, Bonnie assigns each dot on a grid to a letter. Drawing from her Welsh heritage, the code includes letters like ‘dd’ and ‘ll’ to express her inner thoughts. The jugs are bilingual, just like Bonnie—one side in Welsh, the other in English. Often, the Welsh side is hidden, much like Bonnies use of the language in her day to day life.

The Weaves
Bonnie’s weavings are made from unique risograph prints—each an accumulation of her visual thoughts: shapes, textile patterns, fragments, and deciphering keys to her coded language. These prints are sliced into ribbons and reassembled through weaving, creating layered, chaotic compositions that obscure their original meaning.

Paired Together
The jugs and weaves form a striking juxtaposition. The sturdy, grounded presence of the ceramics contrasts with the frenetic, pixelated texture of the woven pieces. In this relationship, the jug appears to emerge from the overstimulated weave—embodying a quiet stability amid visual chaos, much like moments of clarity in Bonnie’s mind."
