Fraxinus Excelsior: Memorial Urns

Lillemore Latham

18/03/26 - 16/07/26

Ash trees (fraxinus excelsior) are a major canopy species that have significant biodiversity benefits and are the host to many organism, some of which rely solely on its existence.

In the last couple of years, it has been impossible to not notice devastation that ash dieback has had on our trees as it has swept through the local area with landmark trees and small woodlands being taken down for safety precautions.

These memorial urns are glazed with the ash from burnt infected wood and mark the impact of the ash dieback epidemic.

It has been forecast that the disease will result in a loss of 80-90% of the ash trees in the local area.

Marged Owain

Hiraeth

December - March

This series of work interprets the values of traditional craft in new artefacts that experiment with making and with the story behind the object. The concentric circles are inspired by woodturning and carvings on ancient slates from the Ogwen Valley. I am seeking to translate traditional craft values into new native objects that explore narrative and history. The bronze bases represent the importance and value of the time spent learning these craft skills. The glass candles symbolize the fragility of life, and the Welsh thread refers to the varied lengths of everyone’s lives. The purpose of the work is to commemorate and celebrate our traditional crafts, appreciating the skills I inherited from my family in learning these ancient crafts. The writing on the glass is a poem by Brian Patten, inscribed in my own handwriting.
